~Root Canal Post Op Instructions Form

Post Operative Instructions for Endodontic Treatment (this form is given to patients when leaving our office following root canal therapy)

Root Canal treatment was completed today and a temporary filling was placed in the access of the tooth. At this point we recommend:

· You may eat once you leave the office but should avoid chewing food on the side of your treated tooth until you have the permanent restoration placed by your General Dentist

· Refrain from eating any hard foods (i.e. peanuts, ice, popcorn, hard pretzels) until your General Dentist advises you otherwise

· Call your general dentist to schedule for a permanent restoration

· Take medications as prescribed

Over time, temporary fillings may leak or weaken, causing contamination of the Root Canal. We would like to see the temporary filling replaced within thirty days or as soon as the General Dentist's office can schedule your appointment. They will then recommend which restoration is best. In many cases, a crown or porcelain bonded restoration will be recommended on a tooth that has had root canal therapy.

You were given a prescription for 600 mg Motrin which is preferred instead of the over the counter Motrin. Please take as directed – one tablet every six hours for 48 hours following treatment. If symptoms persist, you may continue the medication. It is normal to feel some minor aches and/or some initial throbbing of the area.

You may be asked to return in six months in order to take a radiograph and recheck the healing on the area.
